2013 Year End Review

I have FUN everyday ...it is good for the soul and for the immune system!

As an instructor, my greatest reward is seeing my students FEEL the dance I just taught. Watching them on the weekend social floor, proud of themselves for accomplishing the newest dance, smiling, laughing and having a great time with the friends made through dance! Everyone knows that we dance for EXERCISE, with that in mind, MOST diehards will get up and dance to WHATEVER the DJ plays if they happen to have been exposed to the pattern. I am not one of those dancers, but I WILL get up and try to re remember and oldie that I USED to like. I have been on the weekend social floors in the Bay Area since 1994 and I have forgotten way more dances than I know! Every weekend social dancer has a favorite (old or new) and if there are dancers on the floor to follow, then I am up excercising MY brain! Re learning that oldie means remembering a MEMORY and that puts a smile on my heart! (Rachael McEnaney's classic Mack the Knife 2000 comes to mind. Michael Barr taught it at one of Jamie's Sunday socials back in the day. I still remember him telling us that a 16 year old choreographed the dance!)

I use my time looking at, trying out or learning the "newest" dances buzzing on facebook. When I find that 'special' combo of music & pattern that my students will like and won't take me an hour to teach, then I am EXCITED to get to my class and teach it. My students 'hear' music so well, that I trust a Class hit or miss. MY validation for any dance I taught or teach is the EVENT weekend social floor. Multiple turns are not deal breakers, but pattern 'flow' is. I attend events to SEE for myself the popularity of dances and IF I see a new one, NOT on the workshop schedule, hit an the event floor...that 'find' is pure dance heaven gold! (Quarter After One & the most recent, Clap Happy, come to mind.)

San Francisco Bay Area dancers attend workshop/event weekends & learn the latest dances. When they return, they do want to be able to dance the ones they LOVED. I am forever checking the request list initials, listening to the opinions of the 'mainstream regulars', AND of course, If Louie knows your name, then you have my ear also! Grins.

Dance Longevity depends? If requests keep coming & IF DJ 'discretion' will play it.

2013 DJ 'discretion' prevented Blurred Lines (the music) from being played at BnB in Fremont when Millie, Diana, Tina, Mike & Joyce and Evelyn & Denny were DJ's. Gary Clayton had 11 on the floor for Blurred Lines & 4 for Blurry Lines at 10:40PM on December 6th w/17 in the hall.

Back in the day, She Bangs 2001 had DJ music 'concerns' over the lyrics.
Copied from an online explanation: Like many of Martin's songs, it is a romantic salsa song about being infatuated (fascinated) with a woman. The Spanish version of this single received a Latin Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video at the Latin Grammy Awards of 2001.
The title "She Bangs" is also in English in the original Spanish version. It's got a double meaning:
1- She bangs: "to bang" is to explode like a bomb. This is the meaning used here, because he's using the figure of a bomb and an explosion to explain how he feels or how she acts, so "she bangs" means, more or less "she's explosive", "she's pure dynamite".
2- But in colloquial English, "to bang" also means "to have sex", so Ricky hopes this second idea is also present in your mind.

CQS Christmas @ Barrett w/DJ Jamie Hogan (66 in the hall) on December 21st 2013.

Oldie Votes: 13 Cruisin' & She Bangs. 10 Nothin' But Taillights, River of Dreams, Rock Around the Clock, Tumbleweed & Zydeco Lady.

8 votes: 1234, Beautiful in My Eyes, Chill Factor, Half Past Nothin', Hello Dolly, Night Nurse & Simplemente.

There were NO write ins ....Jamie's CQS request list for NEW dances was complete enough for the following votes:
A Liquid Lunch 11, Be My Baby Now 10, Believe in Me 9, Boom Sh-Boom zero, Clap Happy 5, Counting Stars zero, Dream Lover (Daniel Whittaker) 8, Faking It 9, Flower zero, Frozen Heart 3, Girl Power 3, Gleefully There 11, Heaven's Just a Sin Away 10, Hurt Me Carefully 7, I Hope You Find it 12, I Wanna 3, If I Had Wings 6, Kreedom 14, Light in the Winter zero, Long Distance Love 1, Make a Move 2, Memories are Made of This 2, Mirrors 4, Night Nurse 5, Nitty Gritty zero, No Life After You zero, No Man's Land 10, Outta My Heart 3, Pavement Ends 3, Remember That 7, Running Scared zero, Same Thing Happened to Me 7, San Francisco Bay Blues 11, Sexy Lady zero, Shakin' My Head 10, Slip zero, Solayoh 3, Spanish Harlem zero, Stripes 2, The Fox Line Dance 3, The Good Life 9, The Lone Ranger 8, The Thunderer 3, This is Me zero, Thousands of Songs 6, Throw Away the Key 3, Time in a Bottle zero, To Eternity 4, Treat Me Right 8, Voodoo Jive zero, Waltzing at Twilight 11, Windy City Waltz zero, WOW Tokyo 9 and Wrong Side Slide 2.

My FUN thoughts at CQS with Jamie (and her assistant Mary)
OH sxxx ...Believe in Me is playing ...and before I could get the Brie & crackers all put out, Night Nurse came on ...geez! it is gonna be a good nite & the dancer next to me said ...I guess so, we usually have to WAIT late at night to get those played!
Jamie had 66 dancers to please...some of us old time mainstreamers, some intermediate dancers so new that Beautiful in My Eyes is a sit out for them and some of her long time regulars that remember Lind Hall Sundays as just a few years back, when in fact that was like 1994 people! (My daugher had her own car and I was FREE to dance every single day and I nearly did, I was so addicted).
I swear, before She Bangs played ...Mary mentioned to me about the lyrics and I listened, but she said ..it has votes and so it gets played! WOW, that is the spirit!
Mary's job is to keep the new dance sheet up to date, gather the music, read the request list, and tell Jamie which music to pull/play. Jamie listens with her earphones and decides on the spot if there is an 'easier' dance so she can call a floor split. (if Jamie likes the music, Christmas or not, she has to come down and dance, couple or line, doesn't matter to her, she has to DANCE.)
I couldn't believe how many dancers remembered Chilly Cha Cha! and CHILL FACTOR!
I thought Waltzing at Twilight was a SLOW waltz, it is turbo if you are fixin' to do Waltz Across Texas to that music. None the less, Janet figured it out and she had us going to town getting our exercise ...then I returned back to Waltzing at Twilight because you know how long that piece of music IS. Some Christmas music was playing ...Janet you know this dance ...ok, I understand ...you are a purest on this ONE and you prefer the original music ..BUT it's Christmas Time in the City!
The FIRST time I looked up to check the clock ...OMG ..it's 10PM ...sxxx I have to dump my nearly full soda and think about that upcoming 101 drive back to Santa Clara. Floor was still going strong at closing time; everybody I talked at was so happy to have gotten their dance fix.

Jamie's 'new' list had 17 slots. Kreedom 14 votes. I Hope You Find it 12 votes. 11 votes: A Liquid Lunch, Gleefully There, No Man's Land, San Francisco Bay Blues, and Waltzing at Twilight. 10 votes: Be My Baby Now, Heaven's Just a Sin Away, and Shakin' My Head.

It was a rockin' good time at the Sunnyvale Moose on Friday the 20th. Hello Dolly jammed up that floor w/75 in the hall. DJ Van enjoys playing something for everyone! Julia Wetzel's Treat Me Right is a staple and tonight Martie got She Bangs, and Ellie got Toes! I don't know who wanted the Blurred Lines music but when he called Hey Bruce, all the regulars hustled to the floor. Joyce Shannon and I had our spots but 2 enthusiastic ladies dressed to the nines for Christmas couldn't help but jump on that floor to dance to that music right close to my 'dancin' space'. When they realized that they didn't have a prayer of pickin' up the dance, they 'free styled' ...everybody get up!

My bottom line: As an instructor, my greatest reward is seeing my students FEEL the dance I just taught. Watching them on the weekend social floors, accomplishing the newest patterns on a 'strange' floor, smiling, laughing and having a great time with dance friends makes all my efforts worth while. I teach the same dance to Monday & Thursday class in a 2 hour session, if the first teach is NOT a class hit, I don't re teach. Easy slip ins are welcome brain relief but the class really enjoys learning a dance I can teach in 35 - 40 minutes. There is NOTHING like the feel of Friend ENERGY! When someone tells me the 'same thing' I was/am thinking; Priceless!
